TRANSFIGURATION OF THE LORD
Gen 15:5-12,17-18 Phil 3:17-4:1 (or 3:20-4:1) Lk 9:28b-36

2nd Sunday of Lent
Joe and Josephine were twins. After their father’s death, they and their mother were driven out of the family home. Their mother rented a small house in the slums. She worked hard to feed, clothe and educate the twins. Their days were depressing and sickening. They were saddened with having to eat poor food, day in and day out. At times they went without food. Four years of hard life lowered their spirits completely.
In the fifth year of their slum life, the mother received a handsome bonus. It was a gift to all the workers on the occasion of the company’s centenary year. The mother purchased new clothes for the twins and herself. To lift up their spirits the mother booked a hotel room in a mountain resort. They stayed away from the slums for eight days. This for the children was like living in paradise. It put
a new meaning into life and a new spirit into living. But all the good things on earth must come to an end.
On the day they had to go back to the slums, they said to their mother, “Why go home? This place is like heaven.” Their pleading was useless. Poor children. They could not understand that transfigurations have a short span, but they boost one’s spirit in life. Joe and Josephine are 57 years now. They still remember the eight days of transfiguration their mother gave them. Their mother is now with the people who enjoy eternal Paradise. They are confident of joining her there one day.
Now let us turn to the Lord’s transfiguration. Both our Lord and His disciples needed it. The vigorous correctives given to the disciples, the harsh remonstration of “Get behind me”, to Peter and Christ’s depressing news of the cross, suffering
