16TH SUNDAY OF THE YEAR
As a young priest I was sent to a village parish. The first night at dinner one of the priests remarked: “What do these men want now?” I could see no men anywhere. The next morning at breakfast the remark was: “Why have these women come?” I again saw no women about. Two days later I heard someone calling me. I opened the door of my room and three women stood there. They complained that they had been waiting for over fifteen minutes. I apologized and said I did not hear their earlier calls. Later I learnt that women and men do not tap at the door. They send signals. The women signal their appearance by dangling the several bangles that adorn their hands. The men convey their presence by artificial coughing. Lung power is their last resort, and that explains how the women got me out of my room.
/> In today’s Gospel we find Jesus in a village. He is welcomed by Martha in to her house. She reminds us of Peter the Apostle. Both Peter and Martha always want to be in control. Even if they are not aware of it, they want to control everything and everybody. They both think they know what others should do, and even presume to give Jesus advice as to what He should do.
We have several Marthas and Peters in our little world. They get upset easily and upset others as well. Our Lord managed Peter and Martha, and it would be nice if you sought His aid to deal with Peters and Marthas about you.
Martha’s sister Mary just sat at the Lord’s feet. She was a good listener and absorbed everything our Lord spoke. Mary loved Christ and for her Christ was the centre of attraction. Martha
