Stepping off the bus he was surprised that none of the villagers wore hats. He wondered why people strolled about at noon without hats. He made conversation with some villagers in order to find out why they did not wear hats. He got no definite answer. When he reached his aunt’s house, the first question he put to her was, “Why do these villagers not wear hats? Do they not know the advantages of wearing hats, and the dangers of not using hats?” His aunt replied, “We have heard a lot about hats. We are grateful to our government for starting a hat factory in our village. It opened out job opportunities to our villagers. My two sons are at present employed in the hat factory. They know a lot about hats, and you |
| will do well to ask them about hats.” “Yes, Aunt, but do my cousins wear hats?” “No, my child.” “But why do they not wear hats?”
Savio’s important question: “Why do villagers not wear hats?” remained an unsolved problem. Today’s Gospel presents us with the problem of prayer. Christ tells us: “Ask, and you will receive; seek, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened to you” (v. 9). This gives to prayer a Trinitarian aspect. This triple quality of asking, searching and knocking can be spelt out in one word—perseverance. The Gospel story clearly illustrates how persistency got bread for the man asking, seeking and knocking for it at his friend’s door at midnight.
